Hey all, I am planning my first trip to Lake Amistad here in Texas. Never having seen the lake, I wanted to ask a few questions before I drive 4 hours to get there. I live in San Antonio. Is there a prefered route to take when driving there pulling a boat? Should I fuel up local and trailer the extra weight or is gas about the same out that way? What is the best area to launch my boat? How are the ramps? Do they have docks to tie up to while parking the truck? And most of all, where are some decent areas to start fishing? The lake looks overwhelming on the map and I would like to put together a game plan instead of buring up a lot of fuel looking around for fish. And last but not least, is there any thing about going out there that I should simply avoid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I fished Amistad for 6 days last March. We stayed at Velvick's Amistad Resort. Gas was a little higher in Del Rio but not outrageous. Food, lodging, and other essential stuff seemed to be very reasonable price wise and not really a tourist trap are any gouging. All the public ramps we used were in good shape and all had docks. We did not buy a Mexico license so we only fished Texas water, heard alot of bad stories of what could happen on the Mexico side. Talked to alot of people that fish the Mexico side and nothing negative from those people. Pattern wise, tons of fish in the lake. We caught over 40 fish per day in late March but none bigger than 4 pounds. Zoom watermelon trick worms in the tops of trees, pearl flukes and crank baits 1n 2 - 10 ft of water. Sinko type baits worked well also. You will not have problems finding fish but the big girls are elusive. One last thing, the water is crystal clear, being from Oklahoma I had no idea what clear meant till I fished Amistad. Good Luck. Gilly:)

Dan,

We were there back in mid-October. The lake has come up around 20' over the past few months. It was our first trip, we stayed at Angler's Lodge, just up the road from Amistad Resort. Really good people there at Angler's.

The best way is Hwy 90. I live in Boerne and I take 46 to 16 to Bandera, from Bandera to Hondo and pick up 90. I was there twice in Oct and used the same baits the other guys mentioned by we have had a pretty good zara super spook bite. From SA to avoid a lot of traffic the best solution is to go early before traffic starts to build.,
