I was out bowhunting last night and shot a nice fat doe about 10-15 minutes before dark. I was waiting the customary 15-30 minutes for her to get down and bleed out when I heard a coyote yip down over the hill from where I was. I'm thinking maybe I should go get that deer before the coyote finds it. Well, just then I heard several more yipping and howling from the same direction. I KNOW I should be getting to the deer pretty quick now. I gather my gear and climb down, track her as best I can in the dark. The doe hadn't gone far. As I came over a little point and started down the coyotes had already found her and became very aggressive. I yelled and ran at them, but they actually stood their ground and then came towards me! I could barely make them out in the growing dark, but there appeared to be more than a dozen of them and I'm thinking the odds ain't to good in my favor, so I backed out of the situation. Sidearms are not legal to carry while bowhunting in Maryland, but I'm thinking very seriously about carrying something for protection. Just wanted to give all you bowhunters a heads up to watch out for this kind of situation with the coyotes getting more populated each year here in the east.

I'd deffinitely pack atleast a .22 of not bigger,.....1 shot and those 'yotes woulda scattered,...better yet,....shot one of THEM and the other's will tear it's ass apart,...they are canabalistic too!!

They can be veeery aggressive when hungry. I was muskrat hunting on my great aunt's farm pond when a yote snuck up on me from behind and actually grabbed a dead rat from my pack. I had my aunts Australian Shepard with me (he was actually down in a ravine and didn't initially see what happened but when he did, he made short work of the yote. He was a yote killin machine!!

Hard to pack a sidearm here in in the Socialist Republic of Maryland. I'm thinking pepper spray until I can come up with a better solution. I got rid of my .44 mag Super Blackhawk years ago because of too much power in most situations. I will probably look for something in the more multishot, smaller variety, if I can find something affordable. Bigger than .22, but smaller than the .44 I had.

Found a Ruger P85 with 2 clips and 2 boxes of shells for sale for $250. From what I read, this is a real tough workhorse of a semiauto. Any thoughts on this weapon and the price?

I need to borrow one of those "yotes" so I can rid yard from some armadillo's, understand all they got to do is pee in some places and them dillo's will be gone.....

Mike, you can have all of them if you want! They do make powdered coyote urine that you can buy. Just add water and spread it around. I intend to simply knock the piss out of these given the chance!

You'll HAVE TO Scott if you want to deer hunt there,.....the 'Yotes will run the deer off....I have a great way to do it,...will email you!!;)

What calibre? I dont think I'd chance a .22 cal. on what is essentially a dog. A 9mm, yeah, and for a nine or bigger $250 is a good price, especially with the extras. And even better if there's no paperwork.

FYI...When I mentioned a .22...I wasn't meaning to use it to shoot the coyote,..just shooting into the ground or at their feet will run them off long enough to recover the deer. "IF" a c/o should catch you with anything bigger (that could obviously kill a deer) he/she may not cut you any slack, and give you a ticket.......but if you've only got a .22 pistol and you told them it's only for the 'yotes that try and steal your deer.....they "might" give you the riot act, but at the same time, believe that you're not hunting with it. Who knows....I guess it's one of those cases where if you're going to break the law,....might wanna just break it a "little" vs. a LOT!!! LOL!!

In for a penny, in for a pound.:) I'm for never doing anything haff fast, so if your gonna break it, break it all the way!:D:D

Scott, I've had a Ruger P95DC for @ 12 years. Added it to my collection back then with a high recommendation from a relative. It is now one of my favorite HG's. It is well made, accurate, easy to handle, easy to clean and eats any and all ammo. I have put alot of rounds through it and can't recall a FTF or FTE. You'll like your P85 alot I'm guessing. The only thing I would add is that it's a bit heavy for a CCW but, makes a perfect night stand HDW for my wife.

p.s. Price sounds good

There were three listed on gunbroker.com from $201 - $250 - $299. The $250 looked to be about the best, and came with one HCap mag. Looked kind of worn also. Add to that the shipping and fees and paperwork, I'd say jump on the one you found if you havent already.:D

Thanks guys. The guy sold the P85 the first day he listed it. Said he might have priced it a bit low.:) I'll keep my eye out for another or similar. Mac, that was some idea you sent me. Pure evil...I like the way you think!
