while in Canada, I recorded my trip mileage on the GPS, and came out with 59 miles outta a 30 gallon tank, now the tank wasn't completely empty, so we'll call it 2-2.5 MPG max outta this motor. Is there somethin wrong here? I always read how good the Optis are on gas, and so far I'm not impressed, but at he same time, I really love the motor it runs like a mutha! :) Anyway, I also filled the oil resevoir(3 gallons) and it didn't use any oil much at all, is this also ok? I posted this on the BBc, but didn't get much response, so I'd try it here, it seems on the BBC if you complain about a Merc people don't respond too well to it, I'm just lookin for help to see if I may have a problem ya know? Anyway, I have no complaints, if it is what it is, no biggy, just checkin'........what would cause this, and by the way, I do run mostly in the 60's, so I am runnin in the upper range most of the time

Bass and walleye magazine did an article that had some mpg's in it for the DFI motors. Maybe someone has a link. From memory best mpg was around 6mpg.

I just sold a boat that I had that had a 99 200 optimax and normal cruising it seemed to use about the same gas as my previous boat's 04' 115hp merc. With the hammer down I did notice the fuel hand moving like I had a 200hp then. I would say it is the upper rpms that are causing it.

Mike, the opti's really are no better then anything else at wide open. Bass and walleye mag has done plenty of fuel flow tests that show that. If your running WFO its gonna eat the gas, simple as that.

At cruise speed they are much better on fuel then thier efi or carbed counteparts.

I thought cruising speed "was" WOT when conditions allow!!!

Thanx guys, you put me at ease, maybe I'll hunker down and try, I say TRY to run mid rpm levels and see what she does, cuz at 65 it suck the gas!!!!!, And Yes BOBG, cruisin to me is WOT!!!!:lol::lol:

Jim is correct. WOT is almost the same as an EFI and slightly better than carbed.

Even my lil' 90 uses quite a bit a WOT but, sips it @ 3500 to 4000 RPM:cool:

Byron V. of Basscenter said that most pros run at about 5000 rpm when out practicing or fun fishing. The lower rpms would yield much better mpg's than WOT.
