I know, who'd a thunk it huh? LOL I don't no stinkin Consumer reports to tell you THAT! Just look at the stack of repair bills in my glove box.

 
They're full of it!!! I've got 103K on my 2001 Jeep GC and only two trips to the shop. At about 90K the cooling fan quit (covered under extended warranty) and just last week the power lock on the hatch went south. That one wasn't covered it cost me $130. Everybody I know has had great reliability from their Jeep. I haven't spent a bundle on all those routine maintenence check up ripoffs either. I just keep the oil changed and drive the hockey sticks out of it.

I just got the report back on the 1999 Jeep GC Limited from the mechanic and he said it is in really nice shape for a used vehicle. He said both axle boots are ripped but I don't need to fix them until I hear popping??



I also talked to him about reliability and asked him about Forerunners or Pathfinder and he said to stay away from those because they are so expensive to repair.



He felt like a Jeep was a good choice because of the 4.7 V8 Chrysler engine. Felt he has seen little problems with the engine and the rest is fairly inexpensive to repair. Also liked the Dodge Durangos.



Just thought I would give you a "Teri" report.



I figured if I threw the consumer report stuff out there it might ruffle some feathers.
 
Im with Harpo on this one. I personally dont think think consumer reports is "unbiased" like they claim to be. I have had some of the cars on that repeat offender list and they have been good to me.



Teri if you buy that 99 jeep get the axle boots fixed now that was you wont have to pay more to get the cv joints replaced too.
 
Does it surprise anyone, that the first list is populated by Japanese cars, and the bottom by American cars?



Methinks, there is still way too much bias in this type of reporting.



While Consumer Reports by and large does a good job, they are not as insulated from bias, as much as most would think.



All my 'American Made Cars' that I have owned, have performed very well. Some have needed repair, but most have worked to my satisfaction.



Regardless of where some Honda's and others may be built, I still consider them to be Japanese cars. I made the decision a long time ago, that I buy American, when it comes to cars/trucks/vehicles. Only ventured from it once. VW Rabbit Diesel, in the middle of the gas lines in the early 80's. It performed well mechanically, and was like a tank. But was very happy when gone.



Other than that, I've bought American, and will continue to do so. Regardless of what Consumer Reports thinks.

They did have another article on there that said American cars are now out performing imports on reliability. Doesn't that sound like the opposite of this list?
 
I'm not surprised. My 1999 Grand Cherokee blew a rear main seal at 50K.The Cherokees are also notorious for radiator problems.

LMAO!!!...this reminds me of all the FLACK I heard when the JD Powers ratings came out regarding boats!!!..ahahaahhaha

Yeah right!!!! They are WAY OFF! The Ford Escort? Everyone I've talked to said they're junk...AND Geo Prizm? Gimme a break:)

And If the boots are bad.....

Replace them now.

Replacing CV joints later is VERY costly.

I had a GMC Safari (on the bad list) that was the biggest PIA I've ever owned. The engine was great but I had transmission trouble, 3 windshield wiper motors, 2 or 3 starters, countless alternators and oxygen sensors, a couple of water pumps plus the sliding door was always a problem and trouble with other door handles and power locks...

GMC=Gotta Mechanic Coming

I have owned Subaru, Fords, GM's, Dodge, you name it. My mom has had 3 Hondas and the bottom line is, at least up to now, the foreign cars were a lot more reliable. A LOT more to fix when they did break, but more reliable nonetheless.
 
You got a lemon Harpo! I've owned two Astro's ..One with 268,000 miles and another with 185,000. My sister has owned two also with good luck. Now they had trouble with the trannies but, I think the later models were better.

I agree the American car companies could take a few lessons when it comes to quality. And jeez...What is with all these NEW UGLY@SS VEHICLES! Yuck
