Got a new one for your pre-trip check list. Recently, we went to the lake and my wife has decided to take on the task of starting the big engine (or using the trolling motor), rather than just tending to the line at the dock.

Before I leave for the trip, I always charge the trolling motor for 8-12 hours to make sure it is fresh. I also check the main cranking motor by hitting the engine start for a quick burst (not start, just making sure that it's fresh).

Problem was that I had developed a fuse problem in the trolling motor line at the battery between trips. Didn't affect the battery charge, or the battery, but certainly left us high and dry after I dumped the boat off into the lake. Main engine was cantankerous, and the trolling motor wouldn't budge an ounce.

New check list item.

Be sure and check that the trolling motor will actually run before leaving the house.
