Under the Grab Bag for the Annual Maintenance Checklist the contributor Mark Hoffman notes you should lubricate the safety chains. How or with what do you lubricate the safety chains?

Dennis:

I made a mistake on the checklist, and its corrected now. On some styles of safety chains, the connection to the hitch is made with a closed, rather than open, hook. Once the hook is in place, a second piece screws up to close off the gap. It is important to spray these with WD-40 or some other type of lubricant to keep the screw piece from rusting and freezing either open or (worse yet) closed.

I also spray the entire length of chain with WD-40 just to deter the chains from rusting.
