how hard is it to retro-fit a jack-plate to a 1996 170tf, and is the performance worth the cost and effort? I can run about 50mph (on speedo).

Your boat is equipped with the "Force" engine, and I really wouldn't dive into getting more out of your package. There "might" be some small gain...but....save your money and enjoy the boat.
