Here's the story. I own a Nitro 700lx with a 2001 90HP ELPTO Mercury and I was heading back to the dock running about 5000rpm... Motor turns off abrubtly. Checked the prop and under the cowling and there was no apparent problems.

Cranked right back up and sounded good so I got back on plan and about 1/2 mile away it shut down again.

Okay thats weird so I fished around for about 30min and tried it again. The boat cranked right back up and sounded good and I went about 3miles and shut down again.

Gave it about 30 sec and cranked it up again and know there is a knock in the motor.

No warning signs or alarms ever happened. Boat still runs good just a loud knock. Someone said it could have been starved for fuel and detonated a cylinder but I dont know.

Any Ideas???

Doesn't sound good. Sounds like it needs to see the Doctor.

It looks like you make some long runs, I'd hate to have it die 5 miles from the ramp.

From my understanding the motor shuts down to save itself. My Tracker service rep told me if my opti shuts down even once and then restarts idle back to dock and bring it in to see what code it throws. Doesn't sound good.

Pull your spark plugs (see if one looks "steam cleaned" )and look for shavings/pieces or scope the cylinders and you'll know in an instant. I agree though, a "knock" is never a good sound. Good luck! ;)

As others have said, a trip to the 'Doctor' is in order. A knock is not a good thing at all.

I had a Merc 90 ELPTO do some funny things in it's firt year on a tourney weekend. Mine didn't have a knock, but it would run fine then really throttle back/stall. My problem was electronics that went out and needed to be replaced.

Best of luck on the vist to the 'ER'!

I had the same engine on my last boat and it did the same thing. Not saying it's not blowing up or done damage, but with mine it was a fouled plug, the engine would just shut off and then recrank a few minute later, and it was knocking alittle but more of a real rough idle. Hopefully that is all that is wrong, but I would certainly take it in.
