Stuck safety cable

One of my safety cables is stuck partially pulled out and now won't go in either direction. I sprayed WD40 from both sides of the tube that holds the cable and spring numerous times, and partially disassembled the front. Would hammering a metal rod through the back of the tube do it or could potentially make things worse?

Tapping from the back of the tube with a steel rod and hammer did the trick.
