What you see in the pictures is the inside wall of the bow center hatch. The inside wall of one of the hatches has deteriorated. It appears to be delaminated wood. The gas strut screws fell out and that is when I discovered it. The other side of the center hatch at the bow is okay. I plan to make a template using cardboard and cutting a new piece of plywood (I guess). But seeking advice as to how to attach it. Should I cut the other stuff out or simply overlay it? This is a tough one for me.

that looks like oriented strand board. i would replace with marine plywood coated with epoxy resin especially the cut ends. looks like the wood got wet and rotted. osb will disintegrate if it gets wet.

Would (or wood) you cut out the old or leave a tab to connect to it. I just don't understand how new piece will hold in place?

Or maybe I have this mental block thinking I can keep carpet on top of bow without having to screw down new piece from top. The bow deck is in fact fiberglass.
