1995 Nitro Tracker 170DC When I move the shifter forward to raise the throttle it always engages the transmission. I may be wrong but I though you could rev a motor without shifting. Help?

Try pulling the entire shift lever out sideways this will disengage the gear shift and allow for throttle only. Or, if it is a Mercury shifter is there a button in the middle of the lever? If so depress and move forward.

Look for a button where the shifter rotates. Push and hold the button and you should be able to move the shifter as normal, but it will not engage the gears.
