Hatch For Center Step In Nitro 160

in thinking I want to cut out the center step between the seats and make the space into a compartment using the cutout as hatch cover . nay one ever done this ?any suggestions will be appreciated and all comments considered.

more info for center space between seats step . drivers fish finder only works if there is a few gallons of water in bilge . want to access puck to re epoxy to hull. then convert the cutout step to hatch cover. the only way to reach the area is to remove the gas tank and then morf into a snake to even see the thing. help please . any suggestion welcome.
