Hello to all:

I thought this would be a great topic for discussion and also give me some insight to summer fishing in the Plattsburgh area.

Here's the question:

Pro's(Elite) fished the Plattsburgh area last year, end of July timeframe. Most ran south, I remember Tim Horton winning south of the crowne point bridge.

Why do they run south? Is it the large mouth bite?

Very interested in everyones thoughts.

Thanks to all that reply.

TC

The big largemouth are more concentrated down south and you can have a whole bay to yourself if no one else makes the run. There are big fish up north as well, but there is a LOT more water to dissect to find them. Typically, the north end is for big smallies, the south for big largemouth.

Rob,

Nice to see you post...

How's the job?

Sorry for the hijack... Rob email me...

Hey Rob,

I think you remember me, I'm Stan Jones friend from Towne and Country Rod & Reel. You sold us you're trolling motor. I'm coming up to marine village the 27th of July through august 3rd. I have never fished the plattsbugh area during the summer months. I've heard stories of the smallies being scattered, is this true? I guess in short what can I expect to find. I like kings bay, mud point, monte bay, etc. Are you around during that time?

Regards,

TC

Ditto what Rob said.

I've fished Champlain twice...Once above Platts and once near crown point. It's like two completely different fisheries.

South:

North:

I have fished Champlain a bunch on both ends. From Crown point south is really LM water. If you like to fish slop thats the place to go. There are some quality LM to be found down there. Up north i have mainly fished the inland sea side in Vermont, im not too familar with the Plattsburg side. It is great smallie water up there. The only LM i have found have been in the gut and that area gets pounded. Im sure there are plenty of other places for LM i just havent spent any time looking for them when ive been up there.

The other thing to remember about the south end is that it warms up much faster and more than the north end and is usually murkier.

Tony, I remember you. Only been a few weeks since we talked. I should be around.

Yeah, the fish aren't going to be where they were, but they are not as scattered as you think. They still school up, just much deeper. Go to 20-25 foot flats and drop shot them in calm weather. If it's slightly choppy, throw BIG spooks, the magnums I think they're called for big smallies. You can dead stick senkos on outside weed edges also. When you find them, you'll find dozens to hundreds at a time and usually all like sized, so 2 lbers will be together as will the 3-4 lbers.

I would say e-mail me for more, but I really don't get to check it that often. If you come through Chazy, look for my boat, can't miss it. That big old brick house is mine, stop in and have a cold one.
