I just purchased a 25W cobra radio for my new tracker boat. I plan to use it mostly on NH lakes and infrequently on in bays on the Maine coast. My question is for those areas is a 4ft whip antenna good enough for line of sight or do you really need an 8 footer ?

Hi Steve, Hudson MA here. I don't have an answer, just wanted to say hi.

Radio is line of sight. Meaning the higher the antenna the further you can recieve and transmit. I use my radio to communicate with other boats close by as cell transmission is spotty where I fish. I'm good for several miles providing nothing (hills, mountain, etc)is in the way.
