I'll be coming due for this after we get back from our trout trip. What all is involved, and is it that important or can I do this stuff myself?

Mark,

My dealer changed the lower unit lube and checked the sparkplugs, then ran it on the muffs to check out how it was running. I think the 20 hour check-up is required per the warranty. I had the dealer do it so there would be an official record in case the inevitable would happen. I also had some miscellaneous warranty items taken care of at the same time.
