    2002 Mercury Optimax - 200hp - help/advice

Good Morning Ryan; The compression numbers look “ok”, but a more accurate tell-tale would be a leak-down test. If it’s a Marina they should have the gauges to perform the task. Look for leak-down not-to-exceed 5-8%. Check gearcase fluid for any signs of metal contamination. User hopefully stayed...

    Taking on water

If water leaks in, it will leak out. Fill it with water in the driveway and check everything listed here........ 1. Motor mounting bolts including jack plate. Lift the bow up high to check.... 2. Any thru-hull fitting. 3. Hoses, livewell, bilge, etc. 4. Damage to hull. 5. Rubrail itself...

    Another Optimax problem

Yes, it does. The tell-tail feeds off the compressor. IT will alarm and fault if deprived of coolant. BUT....do not take this lightly...BE SURE it is only clogged. You can run it on the flush muffs to verify once "purged"!!!!

    Another Optimax problem

Take some compressed are and blow back through the tell-tale outlet.....sounds like you have a piece of debris.....

    engine noise

You have a two-stroke, and there are no lifters or {conventional} valves. There are "reed valves" however. ALL of the Opti's of 3.0 litre displacement have a "tick" and a "knock" of sorts at idle. Is the problem you are describing NEW or is has been there since day one? I'd like to see a pic of...

Engine rattle at WOT - Found a Bolt

Pull the cowl off next time your out using it, and have someone drive the boat while you "observe". Watch the starter drive closely and see if it is "jumping around". They tend to rattle significantly when "aged".....especially as "harmonics" tend to come together...... Check all fasteners and...

    No Water Pressure?

That's correct. Your motor has "HVC" or "high-velocity-cooling", which is a low-pressure system....but...high volume. You should see a solid, constant stream at all rpm's.....;)
  14. B

    No Water Pressure?

That is a pressure operated gauge. Remove the hose from the back of the gauge and with a LITTLE air pressure, check to see if the needle moves. If it does, there is more than likely a clog from debris at the fitting on the block, a kink in the hose, etc. ;)

    Hole Shot

    Checked, refer to post procedure.....;)

    mercury 60 elpto water pressure

No way to check pressure unless there is a gauge installed. Cheap, and it is one of the most important gauges you can have for that engine. That would be the correct part number for the "non-bigfoot" gearcase {yours should be a 1.83:1}........;)
  17. B

    Hole Shot

    Not a good serial number.....

    mercury 60 elpto water pressure

Doesn't matter....once the motor turns over, the blades will flop over......but if you really have to......clockwise....;) OH....and use a dishwashing soap when installing....slippery stuff and it is biodegradeable...
  19. B

    Hole Shot

Need serial number to be sure....but....couple things to check {or have checked}......... 1. Run off a remote tank. Do this to eliminate the on-board fuel tank as a possible restriction. 2. Check air / fuel pressures 3. If not already done so, replace pulse pump and check low pressure pump...
