Quick and Easy GPS Mount
Having spent my last time on the water in 3 foot waves on Lake Lanier here in Georgia, and subsequently getting lost (ended up about 2 miles north of the ramp I wanted) I decided to find a way to mount my Magellan GPS. I had in the past put it in the cup-holder on the console but with the bouncing my 175 was doing in the heavy chop last time it started to bounce out, so I turned it off and put it away (bad idea that day J). I looked at the Magellan mounts, but knowing that I will probably replace/upgrade my GPS in the next year or so, I did not want to drill holes for one specific brand and then have to do it again next year.
So, I started looking at “generic” mounts and ended up going with a Samsonite â
($17.95 at Target). What I like about
this one, I looked at about 10 different ones over 2 weeks, was that it was
adjustable to handle a wide range of sizes but also tightened down quite
well. It’s spring loaded and tightens
in from the outside-in, with a shelf on the bottom as well. I may well take Rich and other’s advice and
add Velcro on the back for an extra safety measure. I wanted to mount the GPS on the console so it was easy to see,
access and stay dry. Noah (my 3 year
old) suggested the location. I tried to
mount it higher (between the Tach and Speedo but the steering wheel blocked the
controls out), and also wanted it where it would not get in the way of moving
around the boat when I’m fighting those big fish! Here is a shot of the mount

Here are a couple of shots with my GPS in the holder.
